Long before “Keep Austin Weird” became a slogan, Sankarshan Das was living it — not just embracing the weird, but embodying its deeper meaning. In the 1960s, when conformity was the norm and stepping out of line came with real risk, he stuck his neck out in Austin to be different — spiritually, socially, and musically.
A singer-songwriter and bhakti yogi, Sankarshan Das once shared the stage with icons like Jefferson Airplane and The Grateful Dead, but his life took a higher turn. By the mercy of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda, he was blessed with knowledge of the Absolute Truth — and since then, he has dedicated his entire life to sharing that truth through music, mantra, and fearless spiritual expression.
For over five decades, he has brought his message to Austin’s streets, festivals, homes, and around the world — not to perform, but to transform.
To him, being “weird” means more than standing out — it means standing for something:
👉 Living by higher principles
👉 Refusing to be just a cog in the machine
👉 Boldly stepping forward to make the world a more conscious, compassionate place
His unique fusion of bhakti yoga and grassroots activism continues to inspire a movement of mindful rebellion — one that still pulses through the soul of Austin today.
